A3 Thinking

Do you think of an A3 as a form to complete?  As many organizations begin to adopt the scientific method for problem solving, they also adopt A3 Thinking as a way to document their thinking. However, A3 Thinking is much more than that. The framework, and the thinking it represents, is foundational to the development of an organization filled with problem solvers.

The practice of A3 Thinking develops evidence-based thinkers, fosters communication among stakeholders, creates alignment to strategic goals, and enables reaching agreement around root cause countermeasures. Moreover, A3 Thinking functions as a method for people development, change management, project management, and knowledge sharing. During this learning experience, participants apply the thinking behind the A3 to a problem they own in their work areas.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the requirements of sound A3 thinking and management following the progressive stages of learning as presented in the textbook for the course, Managing to Learn.
  • Show beginning understanding of the thought process and connections between the sections of the A3 Thinking framework.
  • Practice iterative A3 Thinking on one organizational problem they own.
  • Practice asking more effective questions that support better A3 Thinking for self and others.
